In just a few days, triathletes will be flocking to the Valley of the Sun for our annual Life Time Ti Tempe, but Tempe isn’t just an ideal spot for a swim, bike and run. The flourishing college town centered around Arizona State University offers incredible cuisine, coffee and more for locals and out-of-towners alike. Check out our list of hotspots to hit up below to make your racecation to Tempe a memorable one!
The must-stop coffee shop.
Cartel Coffee Lab is the go-to coffee spot for everyone from students to local residents alike, and it’s as much about community as it is coffee. With intriguing blends and a friendly and knowledgeable staff of baristas, each visit to the lab is sure to be an enjoyable one. A favorite local routine is to come prepared with growler in hand, and stock up on some of their famous cold brew to go. Or, simply enjoy a coffee and pastry in their fresh and funky atmosphere, you won’t be disappointed.
Quick, reliably healthy eats.
Look no further than Pita Jungle, a weekly must-have for Arizona locals. Specializing in delicious mediterranean fare, their Chicken Shawarma is what has people lining up at the door. But in reality, everything from their Cilantro Jalapeno Hummus to the Glazed Chicken Lavosh Pizza is worth a stop (or three, because you should definitely try them all). Top your meal off with some Chocolate Dipped Walnut Baklava Rolls and you’ll leave feeling the most satisfied you’ve felt in years.
If you’re a beer lover, you can’t leave Tempe without posting up at Four Peaks Brewing Co. You might have already heard of their Kilt Lifter, a scottish style ale that’s won multiple Great American Beer Festival awards. If you’re looking for something more light and refreshing, their Peach Ale should do the trick, especially after a sweaty workout. And while their beer is what they’re known for, their food is a close second. We recommend their Salmon B.L.T. or the Pub Fish and Chips for something hearty, or the Garlic Cheese Beer Bread to split with your fellow Tempe Tri finishers.
Sneak in a workout.
You can’t go wrong with Life Time Fitness Tempe. With state of the art equipment, trainers and group fitness classes located conveniently within the greater Tempe area, pop by for a quick cardio session or enjoy their luxury outdoor pool to cool off from the Arizona heat.
Your local tri shop.
Located right outside Tempe proper in neighboring South Scottsdale, Destination Kona is your ultimate one-stop shop for all your triathlon needs and the best resource for any last-minute race day necessities. Owned and operated by Sports Dietitian, Brooke Schohl, the knowledgeable staff has seen its fair share of Tempe Tri finishes and are more than prepared to set you up for success on race day!
The 10th Annual Life Time Tri Tempe, happening Sunday, September 18, is a community favorite and must-do race for triathlon enthusiasts throughout the Southwest. Many thanks to Social Media Coordinator, Sun Devil alumni and former Tempe resident, Kelsey Norten, for helping us put this list together!
